You don't want to miss this inspiring, fun-filled, social event featuring author Ariel Aberg-Riger sharing insights from her nationally-recognized book, America Redux, poet Jillian Hanesworth reading from her acclaimed work, The Revolution Will Rhyme, and local organizer Chris Hawley, who will share the story of labor leader, Eugene V. Debs.
What makes this night even more special is its setting, Fitz Books & Waffles. Opened by local organizer Aaron Bartley, the bookstore not only features the hidden histories that will motivate you to be an agent of change, but also has a back patio that provides the perfect atmosphere to spend time with friends on what is certain to be a warm Buffalo spring night! Co-sponsored by the New York State United Teachers (NYSUT), this special event features some of Buffalo's most talented, vibrant minds that will inspire you to change the world! This event is open to all educators, Summer Symposium alumni, Academy supporters, and community members. Reservations are required and is limited to 50 people. This event is certain to sell-out! Wine, beer, soft drinks, and waffles will be available for purchase at Fitz's. Light desserts will be served by the Academy. Parking is available in nearby lots and on the street. |

Ariel Aberg-Riger is a visual storyteller who explores issues of equity and social justice, encouraging readers to think differently about history and forces that shape our lives. Her debut book, America Redux: Visual Stories from Our Dynamic History won the 2023 Kirkus Prize for Young Reader's Literature and the Best Book of the Year Award by the New York Public Library, Publisher's Weekly, and the School Library Journal.

Jillian Hanesworth is a spoken word artist who was born and raised on the East side of Buffalo, where she has the honor of being the first Poet Laureate of the city she calls home. The founder of Literary Freedom, LLC., Jillian is a community activist and organizer who has performed over 200 times, empowering her audiences to demand and create sustainable systemic change.

Chris Hawley is a Western New York-born city planner and community organizer. In 2020, he bought a dilapidated 130 year-old property on Buffalo's East side that he repurposed into the Eugene V. Debs Hall, a tavern/community space that celebrates the life of five-time Presidential candidate, trade unionist, and socialist. He is also involved with a variety of other preservation projects, co-founding the group Buffalo Obscura.
