The Power of Us:A Celebration of Youth Civic Engagement
About the Seal of Civic Readiness
The New York State Seal of Civic Readiness was introduced in 2022 by the New York State Education Department to recognize and encourage meaningful civic learning, engagement, and participation among students.
This achievement recognizes young people who are preparing to make a positive difference in our democracy.
Student Requirements
Demonstrate civic knowledge through coursework or assessments in subjects such as social studies, government, history, or civics.
Show civic skills by researching public issues, analyzing multiple perspectives, and communicating ideas through writing, presentations, or discussion.
Participate in a civic engagement experience, such as service learning, youth leadership, community organizing, advocacy, or a civic action project.
Provide evidence of civic dispositions, including respect for diverse viewpoints, ethical reasoning, and commitment to the common good.
Compile and submit a portfolio that documents learning and engagement, reviewed and approved by the school or district.
The Power of Us
Since 2025, The Academy for Human Rights has offered students who are working toward this distinction the opportunity to come together at the Erie County Legislature and share their civic projects, learning from one another’s ideas, experiences, and perspectives.
By presenting their work to peers, students build confidence, deepen their understanding of civic action, and join a community committed to positive change.
