The Reed Taylor Award for Excellence in Human Rights Education
Dr. Reed Taylor Educator, Mentor, and Beloved Friend
A groundbreaking leader in Holocaust and human rights education, Reed was a leader, mentor, and friend to so many, inspiring all of us to live a life for others.
In addition to his distinguished career teaching English at Amherst High school, other highlights of his professional life include meeting Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., babysitting his children, and offering support to his family after King's assassination; driving the injured on Bloody Sunday; serving in the Peace Corps; and, in 1983, serving as a founding member of The Holocaust Resource Center of Buffalo, as well as teaching its first distance learning course.
He worked throughout his retirement, teaching refugee children in Buffalo, participating in the choir of his beloved Westminster Presbyterian Church, and leading classes on world events at his retirement home, Canterbury. In recognition of his life's work, in 2018, the Academy established the Reed Taylor Award for Excellence in Human Rights Education, of which he was the inaugural recipient.
2025 Winner: Dr. Timothy Redmond
Dr. Timothy J. Redmond is an award-winning high school teacher and adjunct professor. He is a regular public speaker and the author of over one hundred articles on critical thinking and politics as well as the book Political Tribalism in America: How Hyper-Partisanship Dumbs Down Democracy. He is also the director of teacher training for the Academy for Human Rights. Redmond, a graduate of Canisius College, received his MA and PhD in political science from the University at Buffalo.
Said AHR Director Drew Beiter, “For the past ten years, Tim has been the national leader for understanding what topics teachers want to learn more about. From Holocaust Denial and Spotting Fake News to this year’s event, Unity through Diversity, his conferences are wildly popular and have influenced hundreds of local educators and thousands of their students, who would easily fill a large sports stadium. What makes Tim receiving it even more special is that this year, we honored the passing of the award’s namesake, Dr. Reed Taylor, who knew Tim, helped inspire him, and supported his work like no other.”
