Whose America?
The Culture Wars in Public Schools
a WeBinar for Educators

Thursday, november 18 7PM-8PM, EST

Join us as Dr. Jonathan Zimmerman traces the history of how school systems and textbook publishers have navigated the conflict of whose stories in American history are told and how. From the efforts of immigrant groups in the 1920s, to civil rights groups in the 1960s, to contemporary issue of Critical Race Theory, this evening will explore the dramatic story of conflict, compromise, and more conflict over the teaching of history in modern America.

In his 2002 book, Whose America?, Jonathan Zimmerman argued that the drive for inclusion had blocked or discouraged a full and honest engagement with American history: new groups were generally folded into the same story of progress and freedom, rather than forcing us to re-analyze the story itself. Twenty years later, that story is very much under question. Is America a land of freedom? For whom? The 1619 Project and Critical Race Theory are not simply demands for "inclusion," as per the common historic pattern; instead, they ask us to scrutinize the larger national narrative. The big question is whether we can equip our public schools to engage such analysis, and whether the American public actually wants us to do so.
